Dry Bean Equivalent

Most recipes call for cooked beans. If you are rotating your dry bean supply, the following equivalents may be helpful:

15-oz can beans = 1 1/2 cooked beans, drained
1 pound dry beans =5- 6 cups cooked beans, drained
1 pound dry beans = 2 cups dry beans
1 cup dry beans = 3 cups cooked beans, drained
2/3 cup of dry beans cooks up to 1 (15 oz) can of cooked beans.

Happy Cooking! Remember, changing the water that the beans were soaked in helps eliminate gas!

  1. The math doesnt' check out:
    15-oz can beans = 1 1/2 cooked beans, drained
1 cup dry beans = 3 cups cooked beans, drained
Based on these two statements, 1 cup of Dry beans would equal two cans. Or one can would be 1/2 cup dry beans.

    But then you say this:
2/3 cup of dry beans cooks up to 1 (15 oz) can of cooked beans.

  2. It totally depends on how full you pack your canning jars, and what type of beans you are cooking. If you like them more packed in, it will take the 2/3 cup dry. If you like them less packed in, it will take the 1/2 cup. Also, different beans are different sizes when they are cooked. This is just a guideline to know how to plan.

  3. Thanks! Just the info I was looking for. Everytime I make hummus using dried beans, it comes out too...dry. Guess I've been using way too much.
